Grubhub 1099-K

If you’re a Grubhub delivery driver, tax season can be confusing—especially when it comes to receiving and reporting your 1099-K form. Understanding this document is crucial to ensure accurate tax filing and avoid IRS issues. Here’s what you need to know about the Grubhub 1099-K and how to obtain it.

What Is a 1099-K?

The 1099-K is an IRS tax form that reports payment transactions processed through third-party networks. Unlike a 1099-NEC, which is used for independent contractors who receive direct payments from companies, the 1099-K is issued when your earnings come through a third-party payment processor like Stripe or PayPal.

For Grubhub drivers, this means you may receive a 1099-K instead of, or in addition to, a 1099-NEC, depending on how your earnings were processed.

Who Receives a 1099-K from Grubhub?

You will receive a 1099-K from Grubhub if:

  • You earned $20,000 or more in payments processed through third-party networks AND
  • You completed over 200 transactions in a tax year.

These thresholds were set by the IRS, but starting in 2024 (for tax year 2023), the IRS is lowering the threshold to $600 with no transaction limit. This means that more Grubhub drivers will likely receive a 1099-K in the future.

How to Get Your 1099-K from Grubhub

Grubhub typically issues 1099 forms by January 31st each year. Here’s how you can access your 1099-K:

  1. Check Your Email – Grubhub will send a notification if your 1099-K is ready. The email will contain a link to download the form.
  2. Log in to Grubhub for Drivers – You can access your tax documents through the Grubhub Driver app or website by navigating to Account > Tax Forms.
  3. Via Payable (Stripe or Payoneer) – If your payments were processed through a third-party network like Stripe, you might receive your 1099-K directly from them.
  4. Request a Copy – If you haven’t received it by early February, contact Grubhub Support or the payment processor handling your earnings.

How to Use Your 1099-K for Taxes

Your 1099-K reports your gross earnings, meaning it includes all payments received before deductions like service fees and expenses. When filing taxes:

  • Report your total income on Schedule C (Form 1040).
  • Deduct expenses such as mileage, gas, vehicle maintenance, phone bills, and insurance.
  • Consider estimated tax payments if you owe self-employment taxes.

What If You Don’t Receive a 1099-K?

If you earned less than the threshold, you won’t receive a 1099-K, but you still need to report your earnings. Use bank statements, in-app earnings reports, or 1099-NEC (if applicable) to file your taxes accurately.

Final Thoughts

As a Grubhub driver, understanding how to access and use your 1099-K is essential for smooth tax filing. Keep track of your earnings and expenses throughout the year to make tax season easier. If you’re unsure about filing, consult a tax professional for guidance.
