You moved, the year closed, and now two returns are due for it. Neither return is final until the other's figures are in, and the credit numbers have to match on both sides.
A cross border tax accountant at Dimov Tax prepares both returns. We classify each income item by country, build the Form 1040 and the T1 side by side, and cross-check the credit figures before we release either one.

We set the sequence from the final facts. You will not always file both returns on the same day.
Our cross border tax and accounting work covers both personal returns and the figures that have to match between them. We sort income by country, work from the move date and residency conclusion we settled at intake, and check stock, rental and foreign-account activity for forms filed with either return. We do not finalize either return while a question is open.
If the move has not happened yet and the decisions are still open, start with our cross border tax services. Our Canada cross-border tax page covers the Canada-specific rules, and foreign nationals with a US residency or visa question should start with our international tax consultant.
We prepare from offices in New York, Austin, Denver, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, San Diego and Philadelphia, are licensed in all 50 states, and work with clients across Canada remotely.
We request prior returns, W-2 and T4 slips, brokerage statements, rental summaries, stock-compensation records, tax-payment proof and foreign-account data. We flag missing documents and any separate corporate work before preparation starts.
You may need both a US Form 1040 and a Canadian T1, the Canadian personal return. We classify wages, T4/W-2 income, investments, rentals and equity compensation from the final records in each country.
We use the agreed move date and residence conclusion to set each return's reporting period and supporting schedules. If your residency status is still unsettled, we settle that before preparation starts.
We run the US foreign tax credit and Canadian T2209, the federal foreign tax credit form, calculations from the tax paid in each country. We then check that the credit claimed on one return matches the tax reported on the other, and apply the treaty position already agreed for your facts.
When your engagement includes them, we prepare T1135, the Canadian foreign property statement, departure calculations from the fair market value data you supply, and the US FBAR, the foreign account report, or Form 8938, the foreign asset statement. We settle which of these apply to you at intake. Our cross border tax services page covers the reporting thresholds.
US and Canadian specialists cross-check the figures that appear on both returns, confirm e-file authorizations, explain balances and payments, and set the filing order from the final facts. After filing, we handle notices, corrected documents, estimated payments and the next cycle.
We prepare prior-year US returns under the Streamlined Foreign Offshore Procedures, open as of September 2026, and prior-year Canadian returns.
Tax planning and tax preparation are two different activities.
A US and a Canadian cross border accountant each own one side of the file.
Prepares the federal and applicable state return, classifies Canadian-source items for US reporting, and reviews the scope of Form 1116, the foreign tax credit form, FBAR and Form 8938.
Prepares the T1 and included schedules, reviews Canadian-source and foreign-source income, and handles included T1135 or departure reporting.
Compares the two prepared returns line by line, confirms that exchange-rate treatment, taxes paid and withholding match, and clears payments and e-file approvals.
You review drafts of every return before we file anything, and answer any last questions on income, accounts, dates or payments. We record which figures we used in the other country's credit calculation, so if you receive a corrected slip or a notice later, we start from the completed file.
We quote cross border accounting work based on how many personal returns are involved, the states or provinces, the income categories, the number of foreign accounts and assets, whether T1135 or departure schedules apply, and the condition of your records. We quote a Canadian T2 corporate return, a private-business valuation, catching up on unfiled years, or an advisory project separately.
The process was incredibly straightforward and they kept me up to date throughout. Everyone was incredibly communicative.
Our team includes CPAs and Enrolled Agents who work on individual returns, business taxes and tax planning. Tell us what you need help with when you get in touch.
Send last year's US and Canadian returns and your move date to start. Our cross border tax advisors will tell you what else is needed, confirm which returns are in scope, and assign the US and Canadian work before preparation begins.
We state in the quote the returns and supporting forms included, the records still needed and any separate corporate or valuation work.
