Wells Fargo 1099 forms and the payer details

Wells Fargo reports your interest on a 1099-INT once it has paid you 10 dollars or more in the year. Wells Fargo may report a bonus for opening or funding the account on a 1099-INT or on a 1099-MISC, and Wells Fargo picks which one it uses. The payer name, address and identification number are in the payer block on your own form.

  • Wells Fargo reports interest on a 1099-INT, on the balances you held across the year.

  • Wells Fargo reports an account bonus too, and Wells Fargo decides whether it goes on a 1099-INT or a 1099-MISC.

  • Copy the payer details from your own form. Wells Fargo filed that name and number with the IRS.

Which form Wells Fargo uses, where the payer details are, and what to do with no form

  • Wells Fargo reports interest of 10 dollars or more on a 1099-INT, and may report an account bonus on either a 1099-INT or a 1099-MISC.

  • Copy the payer name and identification number from the payer block on your own form. A number from a search result can be a year out of date.

  • Wells Fargo issuing no form does not mean you received no income. You report the interest from your statements whether or not a form comes.

Wells Fargo’s payer name, address and federal ID number

Copy all three from the payer block on your own form. Wells Fargo filed those exact details with the IRS, so the IRS will match your return against them.

Wells Fargo changes entity names and identification numbers from time to time. A number you copy from a search result can be right for last year and wrong for this one. A wrong payer number is a mismatch on a return you otherwise got right, which is why we do not publish them.

What a bank 1099 does and does not carry

The number you are looking for is on the form already.

  • Interest paid

On deposit balances across the year

    1099-INT
  • Account opening bonus

Reported, and the bank picks the form

    INT or MISC
  • Payer name, address and TIN

    Printed in the payer block

    copy from yours
  • Below the threshold

    No form issued

    still reportable

Names and identification numbers change. Your own form matches.

Why Wells Fargo may report a bonus on either form

Wells Fargo pays you a bonus for opening or funding an account. Banks have reported that payment both ways, as interest on your deposit and as other income, and Wells Fargo does not state on its tax pages which it uses.

  • Wells Fargo adds a bonus it reports on a 1099-INT to your interest income. Wells Fargo reports a bonus on a 1099-MISC as other income. You owe the same tax either way, and what changes is where you enter the figure on your return.

  • The two forms carry different thresholds. Wells Fargo must issue a 1099-INT from 10 dollars of interest. Wells Fargo must issue a 1099-MISC only from 600 dollars for 2025 payments, and from 2,000 dollars for 2026 payments. A bonus Wells Fargo treats as other income may produce no form at all, and you report it anyway.

  • Rewards you earn by spending on a credit card are different. You buy something and Wells Fargo gives part of the price back, so the IRS treats the reward as a rebate and you owe no tax on it.

If Wells Fargo sends you no form

  • You earned less than 10 dollars of interest. Wells Fargo issues no 1099-INT below that. Report the interest from your statements.

  • Wells Fargo treated the bonus as other income and it was under the threshold. Wells Fargo issues no 1099-MISC below 600 dollars for 2025 payments or 2,000 dollars for 2026 payments. You report the bonus anyway.

  • You closed the account. Wells Fargo mails a paper form for a closed account, and if you hold another active account you can download it there.

  • Wells Fargo holds stale details for you. An old address or a taxpayer number Wells Fargo cannot match will hold the form. Update your account, then ask Wells Fargo whether it issued one.

When Wells Fargo sends your 1099, and where to find it

Wells Fargo postmarks banking tax documents by January 31 and posts them online on or before the same date. You can find up to seven years of them in your online account.

If you also hold a brokerage account, Wells Fargo sends that 1099 separately through Wells Fargo Advisors. Brokers work to the February 15 deadline, and that form does not appear with your banking documents.

Wells Fargo notes that federal reporting rules can make the figure on your form differ from the figure on your December statement. Send us both and we reconcile them.

If your interest for the year was under 10 dollars and Wells Fargo sent nothing, send us your December statement. The interest still goes on your return.

What we handle on a Wells Fargo 1099, and what we do not

We identify what each figure Wells Fargo reported is, and we put it on the right line of your return.

We do not open accounts for you and we do not pick which bonus offers to take.

For what you owe on interest and bonus income, see individual tax preparation. If the IRS has already written to you about a mismatch, see IRS audit representation.

How we work with you

  • We put a CPA or an Enrolled Agent on every return. We do not use seasonal staff.

  • We quote you a fixed fee before we start work. We do not run an hourly meter.

  • We answer your email within 24 hours, in filing season and outside it.

How we handle Wells Fargo 1099 forms

  1. Send us the forms Wells Fargo issued you, plus your December statement if a bonus is in question or no form came.

  2. We identify what each figure is, whether interest, bonus, or both, and which form Wells Fargo chose for it.

  3. We check the forms against your statements, because Wells Fargo issuing no form does not mean you received no income.

  4. We put each figure on the right line, so your return matches what Wells Fargo reported about you.

  5. We file, and we give you a summary to work from next year.

What moves the cost

  • How many forms arrived and how many payers issued them
  • Whether figures have to be rebuilt from statements
  • Whether a prior year needs amending
  • Whether a matching notice has already been received
  • Whether the year is current or late

Pricing runs per return, not per form. These are the factors that set a quote, and you get the fixed number before the work starts.
