  • Fixed quote from the first call; the planning team prepares the return

What tax planning for high income earners covers

The 2026 thresholds we plan around past $400,000:

  • The 35 percent bracket begins at $256,225 of taxable income single or $512,450 joint, and the 37 percent bracket at $640,600 or $768,700
  • The IRS reduces the SALT cap once modified AGI passes $505,000
  • Direct Roth IRA contributions are closed at this income
  • From 2026 the IRS trims itemized deductions for filers in the top bracket

We read those thresholds against your income and decide with you, before December 31, which levers to pull.

You get a written plan with a dollar figure next to each move, a midyear check, and a December session. The general service is on our tax planning services page. For high earners we run the same process on a shorter list: the tax planning strategies for high income earners that still apply past $400,000.

Tax strategies for high income earners

How to reduce taxable income for high earners: four lever groups, each quantified on your numbers.

  • Retirement and deferral.

The 2026 401(k) limit is $24,500, plus an $8,000 catch up from age 50, or $11,250 instead at ages 60 to 63. From 2026 the catch up is Roth only once prior year wages with that employer pass $150,000, so you get no deduction for it this year. Owners add a cash balance or defined benefit plan for larger deductions. We size these tax shelters for high income earners first.

  • Charitable giving.

From 2026 you deduct itemized gifts above 0.5 percent of AGI, and the IRS trims a top bracket filer's itemized deductions by 2/37. With charitable bunching, two or three years of gifts in one year through a donor advised fund, you clear the floor once and skip it in the other years. You also avoid the gain by giving appreciated stock directly.

  • Deductions under the 2026 caps.

The SALT cap is $40,400 in 2026, and the IRS reduces it by 30 percent of modified AGI over $505,000, down to a $10,000 floor. Tax deductions for high income earners now depend on which side of that line your income falls, so we time bonuses, exercises and sales around it where the choice exists. We check tax write offs for high income earners against the same caps.

  • Income and investment timing.

We model bonuses, vesting and Roth conversions against the ordinary brackets, and gains from sales under the rates that apply. Our wealth management services team handles portfolio level planning, including the 3.8 percent net investment income tax.

Tax strategies for high W2 earners

A salaried executive or a dual income professional couple has fewer levers than an owner. The high W2 income tax strategies we run:

  • The 401(k) deferral limits, filled before anything else
  • The HSA, $4,400 self only or $8,750 family in 2026
  • The backdoor Roth IRA, $7,500 in 2026 contributed after tax and converted, for filers with no other pre-tax IRA balance
  • The mega backdoor Roth, where the employer offers after tax contributions
  • Deferred compensation elections
  • The timing of equity vesting and sales

A dual income couple also owes the 0.9 percent additional Medicare tax on wages over $250,000 joint. Each employer withholds it only on its own wages over $200,000, so we cover the shortfall through estimates.

For RSU and option timing, see executive wealth management; ahead of a liquidity event, see IPO tax planning. How to reduce taxes for high income earners on salary alone is a shorter list, and we go through it line by line.

Make sure to start planning with a professional far ahead of time, maybe six months before, nine months before.

The SALT cap at your income in 2026

Modified AGIReductionSALT cap
$505,000$0$40,400
$530,000$7,500$32,900
$560,000$16,500$23,900
$580,000$22,500$17,900

Assume you itemize and pay at least $40,400 in state and local tax. A bonus or gain that lifts modified AGI from $505,000 to $560,000 then costs you $16,500 of the cap. We show you that figure before you take the bonus or sell. Rule and figures: draft 2026 Schedule A.

Who we work with

  • Salaried executives and professionals.

W2 income over $400,000, equity vesting, deferred compensation, and a household in the 35 or 37 percent bracket.

  • Physicians and dentists.

Practice income, retirement plan design and entity questions: see tax planning for doctors and tax planning for dentists.

  • Owners with pass through income.

K-1 income, the qualified business income deduction and plan contributions, planned alongside the entity's own return.

  • Households with a liquidity event.

A company sale, an IPO or a large option exercise in the year, where the bracket and the SALT line both move at once.

  • Multistate and investment income.

Income in two or more states, or portfolio income past the net investment income tax threshold, with multistate tax strategy for the state side.

How the planning works

  1. Numbers in.

Last two returns, year to date pay stubs, the equity schedule and any K-1s, by secure upload.

  2. Model.

A tax strategist for high income earners projects 2026 on current facts, then reruns it for each lever. You get the dollar effect of each move in writing.

  3. Decide.

A CPA walks you through the plan, you choose the moves, and we set a December checkpoint for anything that depends on year end figures.

  4. File.

The same team prepares the return, so the return matches the plan and the estimates.

Have your 2026 position modeled before December

Last year's return and a recent pay stub are enough for a first read on which levers apply. A CPA or Enrolled Agent reviews it.

What this planning costs

We quote tax planning for high income earners on the shape of the year. What we price against:

  • Number of income sources and entities
  • Equity or liquidity events in the year
  • Number of states
  • Whether we also prepare the return
  • A one year plan or ongoing planning with quarterly reviews

A salaried couple with one state and no equity is the light end; we quote more for an entity, a liquidity event or a second state. These are the factors, not a quote.

What our clients say

The Dimov group has been a pleasure to work with on my taxes. They recommended changes to my tax strategy which had a significant positive impact on my return this year. Looking forward to working with them again!
