Hi!

A quick question that raises lots of concerns for most people: are you certain your past returns captured every deduction and credit you were owed?

If errors or omissions occurred – you are not stuck with what was filed. The IRS lets you amend a return and claim back what you overpaid – and you would be surprised how often there are thousands or even tens of thousands sitting unclaimed in an old return.

When an amendment makes sense:

  • You are not confident your 2025 return was optimized – missed deductions and credits
  • A previous CPA or DIY software made mistakes – wrong filing status, missed education, child, energy, or saver’s credits, overlooked medical, charitable, or home-office and vehicle deductions.
  • You had a life change – marriage, divorce, a new child, move, a home purchase, a job change – that was not handled optimally.
  • You received a corrected W-2 or 1099 after filing, or forgot to report something.
  • You switched preparers or searched for one and just want a fresh set of eyes on what came before.

How far back you can go:

  • The IRS gives you 3 years from when you filed (or 2 years from when you paid) to amend a return and still claim a refund.
  • For most people that means tax years 2022, 2023, and 2024 are still open – plus your 2025 return.
  • Once a year’s window closes, the refund is gone for good. There is no extension on a missed deadline.

Instead of guessing, let us review every open year at once. We go through your last three years line by line and flag anything that was missed. This will include:

  • Review of all open years with a comprehensive strategy in mind
  • Amendment of the returns if we find mistakes or missed deductions and credits
  • 30 minutes of consulting time to go over your returns with a senior tax accountant after all is finalized
  • Quarterly taxes – in case you are self-employed, contracting, or consistently owing the IRS each year.

Reply to this email by Wednesday next week and we will set up a free 15-minute call to see if a look-back is worth it.

One last thing: tax planning and tax preparation are two very different services. Fixing the past is preparation – but often real wins come from planning ahead. We can go over both in the same conversation.

Sincerely,

—
