Schedule 3 is an additional form utilized by the individual taxpayer while filing their federal taxes using form 1040 or 1040-SR. It captures the additional credits and payments ( including schedule 3 summary credits) that are not captured on the main form. These credits and payments can reduce tax liability or indicate payments already made towards taxes.

The official name of Schedule 3 is Additional Credits and Payments. It is used primarily when a taxpayer either meets the requirements for nonrefundable or refundable tax credits or made certain tax payments that are required to be reported separately.

When Is Schedule 3 Applicable?

Include Schedule 3 with your tax return if you are claiming any of the following:

  • Foreign Tax Credit
  • Credit for Child and Dependent Care Expenses
  • Education Credits (including American Opportunity and Lifetime Learning Credits)
  • Retirement Savings Contributions Credit
  • Residential Energy Credits
  • Net Premium Tax Credit associated with marketplace health insurance
  • Credits not explicitly listed on Form 1040
  • Excess social security or Social Security or RRTA tax that was over withheld
  • Repayment of specific credits, for instance, the first-time homebuyer credit

Schedule 3 is comprised of two sections:

  • Part I – Nonrefundable Credits: These are credits that reduce the tax you owe, but do not result in a refund if they exceed the friendly skies.
  • Part II – Other Payments and Refundable Credits: These contain refundable credits or payments that could be refunded and some tax payments you claimed to have made during the year.

Why Is Schedule 3 Important

Completing Schedule 3 helps you to capture each and every eligible credit and payment you are entitled to, and maximizes tax credits and payments. Omitting the schedule could result in overpayment of tax or underpayment of tax refund.

In most cases, tax software will create Schedule 3 for you, but you should know the materials it contains and why it appears on your return.

Schedule 3 Summary Credit

Schedule 3 is one of the important forms used for reporting other credits and payments that are meant to reduce tax payable or increase tax refundable. In case you want to claim some education credits, some energy incentives, or you have made some special tax payments, you will most likely need to use Schedule 3 together with Form 1040.
