Venmo taxes

Freelancers, sellers and landlords who get paid on Venmo mix that income with rent splits, dinner bills and birthday gifts.

Our CPAs sort each payment into personal or business, report what the IRS taxes, leave out the rest and file the return.

  • A wrong 1099-K.

We document the personal payments on it and keep them out of taxable income.

  • Mixed payments.

We separate shared bills and gifts from business income, one payment at a time.

  • Side income.

We file Schedule C, claim the expenses and set the quarterly payments.

What Venmo reports and what the IRS taxes

  • Venmo files a 1099-K only for goods and services payments over $20,000 and over 200 in a year; friends and family payments stay off it.

  • The IRS taxes pay for work, business sales and rent paid through Venmo whatever the tag, and does not tax gifts, shared bills or items sold at a loss.

  • Venmo, not the IRS, corrects a wrong 1099-K; without a corrected form, we report the personal amount at the top of Schedule 1.

Does Venmo report to IRS for personal use

No. Venmo leaves friends and family payments off Form 1099-K.

Venmo treats a payment as business when the sender tags it as goods and services, or pays a business profile.

The IRS taxes a payment by what it was for, not by the tag, so pay for work sent as friends and family is still income.

Venmo business account taxes

For owners with a Venmo business profile, we handle:

  • Books that match the 1099-K.

We reconcile Venmo with the bank accounts and clean up months or years behind.

  • Deductions.

We claim the business expenses behind the Venmo income, such as mileage, supplies and Venmo seller fees.

  • Quarterly payments.

We include a quarterly tax estimate in monthly bookkeeping, so clients pay the IRS as they earn.

I am self employed and have been a customer for over 3 years. They are so quick and efficient but I always feel like my taxes are done properly and they are quick to answer any questions I have!

How Venmo tax prep works

  • Pull the records.

The account holder downloads the annual Venmo statement, and we connect the bank accounts with read only access.

  • Label each payment.

We mark each payment as personal, business, rent or a sale, then match the business total to any 1099-K.

  • File the return.

We file it with each schedule the IRS requires for the Venmo income.

When does Venmo report to IRS

Venmo files Form 1099-K with the IRS once goods and services payments pass both federal limits in one calendar year:

  • Over $20,000. Goods and services payments received during the year.
  • Over 200. Separate goods and services payments in that same year.
  • January or February. When Venmo issues the form for the year before.

Congress restored that threshold in the One, Big, Beautiful Bill (Public Law 119-21) for 2022 onward. It covers the 2025 payments reported on forms sent in early 2026, and the $600 rule passed in 2021 no longer applies to any year.

The Venmo tax form is Form 1099-K, and the federal limit does not bind the states. For payments made in 2025:

  • $600 of goods and services payments, whatever the count: Maryland, Massachusetts, Vermont, Virginia and Mississippi.

  • Over $1,000 and more than three payments: Illinois.

Several other states set general 1099 limits under the federal amount, so Venmo can send a form well under $20,000.

PayPal, which owns Venmo, issues its 1099-K at the same limits.

How much can you receive on Venmo without taxes

The IRS treats no set amount of Venmo money as tax free.

  • Personal gifts and reimbursements for shared costs. Not income at any amount.
  • Work payments. The IRS taxes the profit left after business expenses, figured with the rest of the return.

Is Venmo taxable income

We sort Venmo payments into two lists:

  • Not taxable. Personal gifts, repayments for shared rent or meals, and personal items sold for less than they cost.
  • Taxable. Pay for freelance work, side business sales, rent from a tenant, and personal items sold for more than they cost.

We report side business profit on Schedule C, and the IRS charges self-employment tax once net earnings are $400 or more. Landlords report rent paid through Venmo on Schedule E.

The IRS collects Venmo taxes on this income whether or not Venmo sends a 1099-K.

Fix a wrong Venmo 1099-K

When Venmo counts personal payments on the form, the IRS sends the taxpayer back to Venmo, because the IRS cannot correct a Form 1099-K.

  • Ask Venmo first. The account holder downloads the Venmo 1099-K and asks Venmo for a corrected form, and we list which payments were personal.
  • Show the error on the return. If Venmo sends no corrected form, we report the amount at the top of Schedule 1, the way the IRS instructs.
  • Personal items sold at a loss. We report the sale on Schedule 1 or Form 8949, so the IRS does not tax it.
  • Personal items sold at a gain. We report the profit on Form 8949 and Schedule D.

A dog walker's Venmo year, sorted:

  • On the 1099-K. $24,000 across 230 payments tagged goods and services.

  • Business income. We report $21,000 from dog walking on Schedule C, less leashes, mileage and insurance.

  • Not income. We take a $3,000 couch, sold for less than it cost, out on Schedule 1.

Illustrative: one account holder, one year, couch bought for more than $3,000.

Venmo 1099-K help from a CPA

Send the form and a year of Venmo statements, and we mark which payments the IRS should tax.

Confidential. We book the call without asking for documents first.

Does the IRS track Venmo

The IRS tracks Venmo through the 1099-K, where Venmo reports the year's gross amount, monthly totals and payment count.

The IRS compares those totals with the return and may send a CP2000 notice if it finds a mismatch. The IRS can add a 20% accuracy-related penalty to tax underpaid on unreported income.

We answer CP2000 notices and audits on Venmo income through our IRS audit representation team.

How to avoid Venmo tax

The IRS taxes income paid through Venmo whatever the tag, so the saving comes from keeping personal money off the 1099-K:

  • Tag personal payments.

Senders mark gifts and shared bills as friends and family, not goods and services.

  • Split the accounts.

Owners take business payments on a Venmo business profile and keep personal ones on a personal account.

  • Add a memo.

Account holders note what each payment covered, such as March rent, so we can prove it later.

  • Keep the statements.

Account holders save each annual Venmo statement with receipts for anything they sold.

Venmo tax preparation cost

We fix the fee in writing before work begins, based on:

  • Volume. We price the sorting by gross income and how many accounts we match.
  • Years behind. We quote a cleanup of past years as one project, with a lower rate when it covers two or more years.
  • Return type. We add Schedule C to the return fee when the Venmo income comes from a business.
  • Consultation. We credit any unused consultation time against the return fee.

One account, one year and a matching 1099-K is the lightest case. These are the factors, not a quote.
